11. Lake Pielinen

Lake Pielinen, about 120 km in length and 30 km in breadth, is the forth-largest lake in Finland and the river Pielisjoki joins it with the water system of Lake Saimaa. Its area is 894 km² and the average depth 10 m, maximum depth 61 m. Lake Pielinen consists mainly of open waters, divided by several islands. According to official information there are 1491 islands. The rivers Lieksanjoki, Jongunjoki and Koitajoki are the biggest rivers flowing into Lake Pielinen. The drainage basin is very large ranging on the eastern side to the wilds of Russia.

Lake Pielinen is a wilderness-like lake. The islands and the shores are often rocky, but between them there are very beautiful beaches and sheltered coves. Even if there are summer cottages on the shores and on the islands, it’s possible for paddlers to enjoy the silence and to be alone.

For paddlers Lake Pielinen has plenty of possibilities in regard to the duration and the diffi-culty of the tour. There are wide, open waters or narrow, sheltered routes between the shores and islands to choose from. In addition to those there are wide rivers flowing into Lake Pielinen and small ponds between the rivers.

Many islands have landing and fire places with the possibility for staying overnight. Don’t forget the everyman’s right, though. If you are longing for more luxurious accommodation, there are several holiday villages in the neighbourhood, where you can stay in a cottage, have a sauna bath and enjoy delicious food.

On the shore of Lake Pielinen there is Koli, the highest hill in North-Karelia. Koli is one of the most famous national landscapes in Finland. Koli National Park is situated on this area, as well.
